Nevruz marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the Turkic Year. Novruz Ərgənəgün Bayramı, Bahar Bayramı Novruz Şimal yarımkürəsində astronomik yazın başlandığı, gecə-gündüz bərabərliyi günündə (Martın 20, 21, 22 də) keçirilir. Bir sıra xalqlar yaz fəslinin gəlməsini təbiətinin canlanması ilə bağlamış, bu münasibətlə şənliklər keçirmiş, onu yeni ilin başlanğıcı kimi bayram etmişlər. Qədim zamanlardan başlayaraq İran, Əfqanıstan, Tacikistan, Özbəkistan və bəzi başqa şərq xalqları ilə yanaşı azərbaycanlılarda baharın - yeni ilin gəlişini şənliklərlə qarşılayırdılar. Martın 21-i İran və Əfqanıstanda rəsmi təqvimin ilk günü sayılır. Novruz həmçinin Bəhai təqvimi üzrə ilin ilk günüdür. Azərbaycanda adətə görə Novruiz bayramında göyərdilən səməni yazın gəlməsinin, təbiətin canlanmasının, əkinçiliyin rəmzidir. Azərbaycan kəndlisi səməni göyərtməklə növbəti təssərrüfat ilinə bərəkət, bolluq arzulamış, bayrama dörd həftə qalmış, hər çərşənbə axşamı və bayram günü tonqal qalamaqla, mahnı (gün çıx! nəğməsi və s.) qoşmaqla oda, atəşə, günəşə olan etiqad və inamını ifadə etmişdir. Bütün bu mərasimlər İslamdan çox-çox əvvəl mövcud olmuş qədim şərq ənənələrinin davamıdır. Novruz bayramı qabağı adətən evdə həyətdə abadlıq, təmizlik işləri aparılır, ağac əkilir və s. Novruz bayramında şiriniyyat növləri (qoğal, külçə, fəsəli, paxlava, şəkərbura, şəkərçörəyi və s.) və plov bişirilir. Rəngbərəng yumurta boyanır, məcməyi və sinilərdə xonça bəzənir, şam yandırılır, tonqal qalanır, səməni qoyulur, ölənlərin xatirəsi yad edilir, küsülülər barışır, qohum-qonşular bir-birinə qonaq gedir, pay göndərirlər. Aşıqlar baharı mədh edir. Oğlan və qızlar təzə paltar geyib çalıb oynayır, yallı gedirlər. Cavanlar at çapıb, güləşir, küştü tuturlar. Novruz bayramında haxışta, bənövşə, kos-kosa oynayırlar.
