The role of Vitamin D in beta-cell function
Author: Admin01 7th, 2009

PhD title: The role of Vitamin D in beta-cell function. Graduate student: Sue Lynn Lau Performers: Members of the Diabetes & Transcription Factors Lab Group Synopsis: Every PhD begins in the dark, but it takes only a few bright sparks to kindle the flame of discovery... The crucial role of sunlight exposure as the most important source of vitamin D in humans is highlighted. Vitamin D is newly recognised to be involved in the function of many organ systems, including the beta cells of the endocrine pancreas. These cells make insulin in response to glucose stimulation. Initially, the beta cells are in an unstimulated state, with minimal activity. At the arrival of the sugar plum fairy (symbolising glucose), the cells are able to sense the presence of glucose through the enzyme glucokinase. When glucose enters the cells through glut 2 transporters (marshmallow feeding), it is metabolised to produce the energy molecule, ATP. Through a number of steps, this leads to a rise in positive charge inside the cell, which ultimately triggers the export of insulin-storing granules by a process known as exocytosis (depicted here by the blowing of bubbles). Normal insulin secretion requires the coordinated function of beta cells via intercellular connections and communications as they work in concert. We are investigating whether vitamin D has an effect in improving beta-cell function and increasing insulin secretion... are they "walking on sunshine"??

Sue Foley - Blues in D Natural / Queen Bee
Author: Admin01 7th, 2009

Two songs from the early 90's (1992?). Born and raised in Ottawa Canada, Sue Foley hails from a large, music-loving family. In her early years, she sang with her father, who loved to play Celtic folk songs while her brothers were in bands hammering out the hard rock covers of the 1970s. Her love of the Rolling Stones and other blues rock bands found Sue checking song writing credits on the albums, where the names like Willie Dixon, McKinley Morganfield and Chuck Berry were found, leading to her study and appreciation of the blues. For her thirteenth birthday, she received her first guitar - "it was my saving grace," she says, and locked herself in her room until she learned how to play. At age sixteen she was gigging around Ottawa clubs, at eighteen she left home for Vancouver, British Columbia, with nothing more than a small suitcase and her guitar. Foley sent a demo tape of herself to Clifford Antone's label (Antone's Records) in 1990. Impressed, the record label arranged an audition for the guitarist. She moved to Austin, Texas and soon signed a recording contract with Antone's. By now she has been writing and playing for over twenty years, has recorded ten albums, for both Antone's Records and Shanachie Records and has spent many years on the road as a bandleader, lead vocalist, guitarist and manager of her own band. In addition to her own touring, she has also shared the stage with other blues musicians, such as B. B. King, Buddy Guy and John Lee Hooker. More info: http://www.suefoley.com/
