This video is about the case of Pennsylvania Democratic congressman Paul Kanjorski, who earmarked millions of taxpayer dollars for a company run by his family. In a startling interview, Joe Yudichak, who ran the non-profit Regional Equipment Center in Kanjorski's district, says the congressman initially tried to bully him into helping Kanjorski direct the money to Kanjorski's family members. In the documentary, Yudichak recounts his conversation with Kanjorski: "He said, 'You're telling me I can't take care of my family?' He said, 'Well, I'm telling you, it's gonna be done. And it's gonna be done with you or without you.' And he said, 'I'll bury you. I'll destroy you.'" Kanjorski later earmarked more than $10 million directly to the company run by his family. The money was supposed to fund the development of new technologies to help turn around desperate coal towns and make them prosperous. The company, Cornerstone Technologies, went bankrupt. Harold Shobert, head of Pennsylvania State University's Energy Institute, and a leading expert on anthracite coal, worked with Cornerstone on one project. Shobert said "It was clear that these guys were clueless as to how to do research and development," "It was sort of like trying to collaborate with the cast of Looney Tunes." Formed in 1982, the band's two biggest hits were "Goodbye to You" (1982 - #65 U.S.) and "The Warrior" (1984 - #7 U.S.) Guitarist Zack Smith formed the mainstream pop/rock band Scandal after playing in various groups, including ones that featured Dee Murray and Davey Johnson of the Elton John band. Scandal's lineup was secured in 1982, with the addition of vocalist Patty Smyth; the rest of the band included bassist Ivan Elias, guitarist Keith Mack, keyboardist Benji King, and drummer Frankie La Rocka. After opening for acts like the Kinks and Hall & Oates, the band released their debut single, "Goodbye to You," in 1982; their self-titled debut album followed soon afterward. "The Warrior" was released two years later. The title track was a Top Ten hit and the album went platinum. However, Smyth left for a solo career the following year, causing the band to break up. Smyth dated punk musician Richard Hell for two years; their daughter, Ruby, was born in 1985. In April 1997, Smyth married John McEnroe; the couple have two daughters, Anna and Ava. Following two solo albums in 1987 and 1992, she secured a further hit record via a duet with Don Henley of The Eagles; "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" peaked at number 2 in the US charts and went gold. Its parent album, Patty Smyth, also went gold and featured an additional Top-40 hit with "No Mistakes", as well as "I Should Be Laughing", a minor hit. She had previously recorded with Henley as a backing vocalist on several songs on his albums Building The Perfect Beast and The End of the Innocence. She subsequently co-wrote the 1994 song "Look What Love Has Done", nominated for a Grammy and an Academy Award after its inclusion on the soundtrack to Junior. Further soundtrack commissions resulted in her penning the theme tune, "Wish I Were You", to the 1998 hit movie Armageddon. As a result of her renewed popularity, Columbia issued a retrospective album, Greatest Hits -- Featuring Scandal. Two new songs were included, including "Carnival Lights". The song, co-written with Bob Thiele Jr., concerned her mother's, Betty Smyth, years as a trapeze artist. Smyth set out to promote the album on an acoustic tour, employing ex-Bullet Lavolta guitarist Duke Roth as her sideman. More babies are getting sick from tainted Chinese milk power. And as the confirmed number of sick continues to rise, some details of the scandal suggest that communist officials may have known about the tainted milk over a month before they notified the public. Here's more: STORY: Chinese officials have said that roughly 53,000 children have been affected by drinking tainted baby formula. Over 100 are said to be in critical condition and to date there have been four confirmed deaths. The poisonous powdered milk was produced by Sanlu Group, one of China's largest dairy distributors. The formula was made toxic by the addition of melamine, a substance used in various plastics and flame retardant materials. Ingestion of melamine has been shown to cause the formation of kidney stones and, in some cases, acute kidney failure. [Chen Junshi, Researcher, China Center for Disease Control] "It's much scarier with young infants because their urinary tracts are very narrow, so they are easily blocked, and once they are blocked that leads to acute kidney failure." The Associated Press reports that Sanlu Group had notified some of its distributors as early as July that some of its milk was tainted and should be pulled from the shelves. There is evidence suggesting that Chinese officials were informed at about the same time. But the contamination was not made public until September 11—over a month later— and that raises questions of negligence and possibly a cover-up. According to AP, there are retailers with warehouses full of tainted Sanlu milk who have been unable to get refunds from the company. So far only a small handful of countries--including Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Malaysia--have barred dairy imports from China, but that may change. With lead in toys, toxic cough syrup, melamine-laced pet food and now melamine-tainted milk powder, questions about China's ability to regulate the safety of its exports loom large.

New Zealand company Fonterra, the world's largest dairy exporter, has been criticised for how it handled the China tainted milk scandal. Fonterra owns a 43 per cent stake in Chinese firm San Lu, one of several companies that sold dairy products tainted with the industrial chemical melamine. Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley discovers that farmers' anger over Fonterra's perceived slowness to reveal the extent of the problem is now threatening further business ventures in China.
