Il 6 settembre 1970 ha luogo a Monza il Gran Premio d' Italia di Formula 1 . Nelle prove del sabato esce in parabolica e colpisce le protezioni l' austriaco Jochen Rindt sulla Lotus-Cosworth 72C numero 22 . Portato all' ospedale Rindt muore poco dopo . In testa alla classifica del campionato prima dell' incidente , il suo punteggio non viene superato dopo i Gran Premi d' Italia e degli Stati Uniti e Rindt è l'unico campione del mondo postumo nella storia della F1. Il Gran Premio d' Italia va allo svizzero Clay Ragazzoni su Ferrari 312B .
